Hooker

Dean Hovey

Dean Hovey's second mystery novel, HOOKER, is set once again in rural Pine County, Minnesota. A young woman, haunted by a decision she made in her very early life, grief ridden and obsessed with guilt, decides to try to rectify the mistake and reshape her life. She makes a phone call. The call turns out to be another tragic mistake. After hearing a scream in the early morning hours, a neighbor finds the door to the young woman's trailer home open; she is missing. Pine County residents are once again shaken by what appears to be a brutal murder. But is this truly a murder? If so, where is the body? And why does the woman keep a doll, clothed in pink, in her bank lock box? Under-Sheriff Dan William's and his deputies must once again put their investigative skills to work. In the process, they discover a sex-ring centered upon the missing woman. She has had a host of clients, among them prominent citizens of the community, including a state senator. But no one is talking. Who among them is the possible killer? And why is the senator so adamant about stopping the investigation?

As in his first mystery novel (Where Evil Hides), author Dean Hovey keeps us guessing as we are led clue by clue to another surprise ending.

Reviews

"The murder of a woman running a notorious prostitution ring (with some high profile clients) leaves her rural Minnesota neighbors asking all kinds of questions - most importantly, where is the body? Hooker, Dean Hovey's sophomore police procedural (after Where Evil Hides), zeroes in on local politics and corruption as Undersheriff Dan Williams and his team face closedmouthed citizens and meddling politicians." —Mystery Notes, June Publications, Publisher's Weekly, May 20, 2002

"This is an engaging story that will keep you turning the pages to the end, and I enjoyed it every bit as much as [Mr. Hovey's] first effort (Where Evil Hides). Mr. Hovey seems to know the genre and is an excellent storyteller. He peppers his plot with lots of interesting details about his characters, again adding to the frightening illusion that this is non-fiction - I highly recommend that you add "Hooker" to your mystery library." —The Midwest Book Review, Robert O. Barclay, reviewer.

" The need to know what will happen to the characters I had grown to like and care for pulled me back into the story time after time. 'Hooker' is not only a murder-mystery, but also a lesson in the value of love and support from home and the importance and on-going influence of one's childhood. This is why I enjoyed 'Hooker' so much; not only for its compelling drama, likable characters, and array of technical details, but the plot spoke to me on many levels. One of my favorite levels is surprise. What I assumed would be a simple crime novel (meant only to disgust and shock readers) would be something that made me think long after I had finished reading, wishing I had someone else to discuss it with." —Ann Skinner, Contributing Writer, The Hugonian.

“Hovey’s development of a sense of place is perfect. The dialog is crisp and realistic. It is refreshing to read crime stories without excess profanity … Mr. Hovey has another winner with Hooker. "—Roberta Austin, for Murder and Mayhem Bookclub.
