The Nisei Soldier

Historical Essays on World War II and the Korean War

(3rd Revised Edition)

by

Edwin M. Nakasone

In the Nisei Soldier  Professor Nakasone, a teacher of Asian-American and World War II history for over 25 years, brings to life a part of history that has been neglected—the account of Japanese-American soldiers, the “Nisei,” as they fought bravely for their newly adopted country despite the discrimination accorded them by the people and government of the U.S.  Nakasone’s narrative is rich in descriptive detail, based not only upon his own experiences but extensive interviews with the soldiers of whom he writes as well.  Without being overly long, the book is thorough in its coverage of the Nisei soldier’s invaluable contributions to the American war efforts As a Japanese-American himself, and having served in the U.S. Army’s occupation forces in Japan at the end of the war, the author brings a special perspective to these historical essayys. This 3rd edition is expanded to include the Japanese Canadian experience during WWII, and now includes additional essays on Japanese-Americans in the Korean war.

Reviews

“The Nisei Soldier is A highly recommended addition to any personal, professional, academic or community library WWII history collection.” —The Midwest Book Review.

“Most of us remember history books and thick volumes filled with endless dates and places to meorize and chapters that were hundreds of pages.   While...Nakasone’s book...definitely qualifies as history, it doesn’t fit any of thos negative stereotypes.   You could read the book in one sitting, but you’d probably remember its content the rest of your life. —Paul Wahl, Correspondent, White Bear Press, White Bear Lake , Mn.

"The Nisei Soldier is a fascinating, fast moving account of major historical events.  It is chronicled in such a way that one sees the faces of the protagonists and feels the psychological impact on them--ideal reading particularly for those interested in the contributions of the Nisei  to our country's wars."—Tom Oye, Company B, 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regiment veteran
